What to do Before you head off to University or College

University Students or Parents of University Students You Need to READ This!

Fall is here! Well…almost. Along with fall, comes the return of many people going to various schools. For some of you that will mean moving into an apartment, renting a room or staying in a dorm.

The last thing anyone thinks of is that something bad, like a fire could happen, and that you could lose everything you own. You know, all your stuff! At this busy time, the idea of protecting your belongings or looking for insurance does not cross most people’s minds. The time people think of it is when something bad happens.

At Pearson Insurance we frequently hear people say, “I don’t have much” or “I did not pay much for what I have”. All of your property, large like furniture and smaller items such as those found in your kitchen can all add up to a lot of dollars! Especially if you had to replace it all at the same time!

Like most people, you probably buy your clothes on sale. (Actually, we all just try to buy everything on sale don’t we?) Plus, when we are starting out, we usually have a lot of second hand things, but still, you will need to have them replaced if something terrible happens and they get destroyed.

Just do this. Look in your closet and your dresser drawers. Take a couple of minutes and count how many jeans, shirts, socks, and other articles you see in those areas. Now put a price on what it would cost to replace each of them. Add it up. Was it more than you thought? (It usually is) People often only think of the larger items like furniture. They are easier to see. We have mentioned clothes, big furniture but we have not even touched on others like, your towels, sheets, blinds, curtains, small kitchen appliances, utensils, dishes, pots, pans and so on. The list can be lengthy and once it is all added up, it can be very costly. This usually is a big surprise to most people who go through this short exercise. (To make this easier, you can take a video with your phone, or take pictures with your phone. This can make it easier to take inventory and make the list. Gotta love technology!)

At Pearson Insurance we can discuss the coverage that you should carry to protect your property. We will guide you through the process to help you establish a limit for your belongings. When this is done, we can look at policies and coverage that would best suit your needs and your pocket book!

The bottom line is this: you really should protect what you have. Sure it may not seem like much to you now, but if you are ever in an unfortunate situation such as a fire, a sewer backup or flooding, you will find out very quickly just what amount of money is tied up in a very few things. Having some coverage with a tenants policy will at least help you to get re-established and not have to start at square one again.

A tenants or renters policy not only helps you to replace your property or your belongings. If after, let’s say a fire, the authorities do not let you back in the building. Your tenants policy will respond with coverage to find you a place to stay immediately. All too often when fires occur, people residing in apartment buildings do not carry insurance and they find themselves relying on organizations like the Red Cross for food, lodging and clothing. These are great organizations, don’t get me wrong, but, with tenants insurance, you can have all this taken care of.

Having a Renters or a Tenants policy in place will sure help you out and put your mind at ease against such tragedies.

The usual cost of a policy to cover your contents can run as low as $15 – $20 per month. That is like the cost of 7 or 8 coffees a month!
