Is Your Service Line Covered?

By August 16, 2017April 4th, 2019No Comments

Sometimes we as brokers learn so much from the claims we report. This one was a big one.

As a property owner, did you know that you are responsible for replacing service lines that run from your property to the street where you would meet the municipal lines? This includes digging everything up, replacing it and re-landscaping, all at your expense. And, boy, does it add up fast.

For example: A sewer line fails underground because a tree root grew into it. You would have to dig up from your home all the way to the road, have the sewer line replaced and then fill it all in again. Approximate cost of that one claim: $10,500. This could devastate any savings you may have.

Costs like these are not normally covered by your home insurance policy.

Wawanesa Insurance has come out with a new coverage called Service Line Coverage. This will help with the cost of replacing these damaged service lines as well as any out-of-pocket expenses in case you can’t live in your some during the repair.

What is a service line?

This includes lines for water, sewer, power, data and communications or heating. Wawanesa will provide up to $10,000 of coverage (subject to your deductible) towards this type of claim. Typical causes of damage are:

Wear and tear
Rust or corrosion
Mechanical breakdown
Weight of vehicles
Vermin
Freezing or frost heave
Tree root invasion

Don’t be caught without this coverage on your home policy. Call us today at (506) 432-1550 or email us at info@pearsoninsurance.ca to make sure you are protected.
